Match Reports 2011/12

Result St Josephs AFC 5 - 0 Cabinteely FC
Date
13th November 2011
Venue Pearse Park

The team had played St Josephs AFC the previous week and had held their own well against this classy side however the score sheet did not reflect that. The difference was made by St Josephs having two key players who made all the difference. The Lakelands lads knew the opposition well and knew their weaknesses. The players were matched up in order to neutralise the threat from the Joeys key players and it worked very well. Giorgio (man of the match the previous week) again played his socks off tackling and winning the ball from a classy St Josephs number 8. In the first few minutes they got an easy goal from us as the Lakelands lads tried to settle down. The discipline showed and we were defending extremely well. The three man defence payed off - a solid wall built from Sean Aherne, Giorgio and Diarmuid - a combination of class you dont often see on one team, which was backed up by Matthew playing like a premiership keeper in the goals. We were unlucky and they scored a couple more goals but we made them work very hard for it. The midfield was working hard with Miguel on the right hand side showing his Spanish skills and Conor on the left playing like a young Ryan Giggs. Up front was Robert who worked his legs off moving around the front half of the pitch causing loads of trouble but they had an extremely big lad in goals who stopped us short.

In the second half , we changed things and moved Dylan into defense - where he played excellently stopping many attacks and frustrating the opposition. Oisin came on for Diarmuid who was due a rest after the hard work he put in. Oisin played out of his socks and was one of the best players on the pitch - he made at least three solid and very important tackles - Well Done Oisin!

Matthew moved out of gaols and was replaced by Miguel in goals who had a brilliant time saving many shots - Matthew was moved up front with Sean A and Robert supporting from midfield - the three pronged attack paid huge dividends with at least three almost goals - two just missing the woodwork and another skimming across the box - this was an excellent run of play and was a credit to the lads. We just need to practice passing up front now that we have the defense in a stronger position.

The score was not bad at the end with 5-0 considering we were playing one of the best sides in the league. The score didn't reflect the game however and we are inches away from having the results to back up excellent team work and skills. The Lakelands lads received a great round of applause from all the spectators and the Joeys coaches graciously remarked how good they were and how much they had improved. Brave players one an all! Congratulations to Joeys! Congratulations to Lakelands for their usual excellent work rates, skills, bravery, team work and FUN!

It was a beautuiful day and everyone was in good spirits. The kids were training hard all week with their parents and gaurdians, kicking balls against chalk targets on their back walls and dribbling between flower pots (and if they werent they should have been :-)). Parents and kids alike were all revved up for the match and very eager to get started.

This was the latest practice match during the autumn run - after Christmas the teams are realigned to their proper leagues and then the league kicks off.

All the lads knew their positions early and we started with a full squad. The safe hands of Sean Aherne were in goal, Conor and Matthew were in defense, Sean Barker and Diarmuid were in mid field with Oisin and Robert up front. Giorgio , Dylan and Miguel started as the first subs.

The game kicked off and lads flew from their positions , taking great command in the mid field and with some lovely runs through the centre. Cabinteely had a very strong defense with a very big player who was hard to get past even with the brilliant skills of Oisin and Robert. Oisin made a great run looking like Ryan Giggs but he was tackled heavily and probably should have been a free kick. The game progressed and Cabinteely got a few lucky chances with some fine gaols scored after many brilliant saves by Sean Aherne. Robert valiantly came back into defense many times to help his comrades.

We made some changes and on came Giorgio, Dylan and Miguel. Giorgio immediately made an impact from mid field and scored a scorcher of a goal. The Cabinteely goal keeper was left standing and Giorgio even got a clap from the opposition parents. Miguel, the 'Spanish Assassin' ran through the midfield like lightning many times and showed his usual skills but he was unlucky. Dylan played up front and showed his impressive skills yet again showing how he can play in almost any position - there was rumours of a Liverpool academy scout being interested in his future signing - he too was unlucky and the keeper kept him out.

Sean Barker was all over the mid field working very hard and retaining and winning possession from the opposition players who didnt know what hit them when he flew past them.

In the second half, Sean Barker took on goalkeeping duties and like a cat kept many goals out. Conor played out of his skin and was all over the pitch creating chances, defending and passing with accuracy. At one point in the second half a heavy tackle brought down a Lakelands player , Conor, and a penalty was awarded - Robert walked up the spot and blasted thye ball but their keeper was verdy good and he pounced on the ball - good save keeper! Matthew also played a blinder and was core to our defense and attack - a great player. Diarmuid is playing like a pro and his tackling and passing are excellent - great work.

It wasnt to be our day - none of the players cared because they are part of a great team and having fun. The team is building - skills and positioning are looking much better. The players are having great fun and creating chances. Once the league kicks off after Christmas we will be in great form and looking for trophies! Go on Lakelands!

Lourdes Celtic 6 - 2 Lakelands FC
Date
18th September 2011
Venue Sundrive Park

The troops of Lakelands ventured out to Sundrive Park in Crumlin to meet probably the best team in Dublin, Lourdres Celtic. Lakelands were on a high – training had gone very well and the players were coming together well as a team. However , with just 7 players we had no subs so we knew this was going to be a long game for the players. Lourdes came out with a squad of 12 players so they rolled on fresh legs very often – we knew we would have to try hard.

Lourdes Celtic sprinted out of the blocks – a well organized team with a strong striker, and they went on to score 4 goals before half time. Lakelands defended very well and tackled like heroes providing some great moves – Miguelito Sanz was dominating the mid field like he had just come the Camp Nou. Robert Kennedy and Sean Aherne were working very hard winning balls and sending them forward to Conor Stevens who danced around the defence as the lone striker. Giorgio Lunazzi was in goal first half and made some excellent saves.

Going into half time we were still very positive – the players had made some great moves and if the game was to be won by effort then surely the Lakelands lads were the winners.

The second half started with a few changes. The Lakelands lads flew out and all of a sudden the game was all in the Lourdes Celtic half – the players had the bit between their teeth and knew that we could beat them man for man. Dylan Saunders was like a rock in defence showing great skill and bravery. Diarmuid also played like he was on fire with great energy and shored up the right side of defence. Robert Kennedy made some beautiful saves with one in particular which saw him jumping up like a cat to save an almost certain goal.

The Lakelands lads scored two magnificent goals back back and Lourdes started to panic – Lakelands were on fire. Lourdes rolled on their substitutes wisely to bring on fresh players while the Lakelands lads started to tire. Brave players and play but it was not to be Lakelands day. Congratulations to Lourdes Celtic! Congratulations to Lakelands also for excellent work rates, skill, team work and FUN!

It was a drizzly day but footballers dont mind that and we had an impressive turnout with all 7 players showing up. Shankill came out on the pitch and looked very big and strong. Lakelands were not to be put off though and all the boys stood up to the challenge. Matthew Dowley played like he was on fire tackling hard, moving up and down the wings with passion and almost scoring a goal after an impressive run. Our goal was scored by Robbie Kennedy after an impressive run down the lenght of the field chased by three defenders whom he out ran like Usain Bolt. Sean Barker made some impressive moves and passes up the wing almost setting up Matthew for a goal. Dylan saunders was an outstanding player and tackled fiercely defending our goal – a player who can play in any position. George Spencer was a natural mid fielder who tackled confidently and started to dominate his own area feeding ball up to the forwards. Miguel played in goal after Robbie Creaseys impressive first half performance where he donned thye number 1 jersey. Miguel made some crucial saves and showed his presence in the box in addition to some great out field play in the first half. Shankill were big and strong and very confident and displayed their strenght in an impressive 9-1 victory which was well deserved. Lakelands went away happy with their game and looking to come back another day and play the Shankill team again.

Result Rangers 3 - 4 Lakelands
Date
3rd September 2011
Venue Bushy Park

The day was beautiful and it was the first outing for the team. All the players were fired up and ready to have a great game. The Rangers players looked impressive in warm up and we knew we would have a battle on our hands. When the whistle blew both teams came alive and played with great determination. Sean Barker was on fire and played up front causing the opposition alot of problems. Conor Stephens took up the goalkeepers reigns in the first half and made a number of crucial saves as Rangers came forward in waves. Lakelands quickly took charge and Giorgio Lunazzi who is a strong player, impressively tackled the ball in mid field, dribbled it up the wing, fed it to Spanish star Miguel Sanz, who ran it by several players before playing it to our assasin Sean Barker who drove a shot into the top corner of the net ! Celebrations went on but it was no time to relax as Rangers drove forward again but were tackled expertly by Dylan Saunders who is proving to be good in almost every position on the field. He cleared the ball to Matthew Kane who expertly passed it to Sean Aherne, who took the ball on his foot and dribbled it impressively past the opposition mid fielders, and up to Sean Barker, who turned his marker and drove a shot onto the right foot of the big midfielder Robbie Kennedy who slotted it home! Great link up work from the two men. The half time whistle blew. Laklelands were not getting complacent - they knew how impressive Rangers were and it was only a matter of time before they started scoring. In the second half, Matthew Dowley burst out of the stocks and ran the lenght of the pitch blasting one into the net 3-0. Rangers came back and scored the perfect goal with excellent skill displayed and a resurgent team now driving Lakelands back and putting them under pressure. Sean Barker put paid to that with another fine goal from the striker. Rangers were not beaten yet, and made several attempts on our goal but with Sean Aherne saving then like a cat, it was not to be their day. Eventually they got one back and then another - we had 5 minutes to go but Jack Drury played like a premiership defender displaying great energy and skill in keeping them out. One more goal came though from Rangers but the whistle had blown with the final score a very respectable 4-3 to lakelands FC. Well done Lakelands! Hard luck Rangers - you played excellently.
